Raktamokshan Therapy: Benefits, Types, and Modern Relevance

Dr Sapna Kangotra

In today’s era, where spicy, oily, and junk food has become a regular part of our diet, the accumulation of toxins and an increase in Pitta dosha often lead to blood impurities and various health concerns. Raktmokshan, one of the five major therapies of Panchakarma, stands out as a natural and effective method to purify the blood and eliminate toxins from the body. Especially beneficial in skin disorders, non-healing wounds, migraine, Pittaj disorders, and even conditions like breast cysts, Raktmokshan offers swift and visible relief. Contrary to the myth that Ayurveda acts slowly, this powerful detox therapy showcases how fast and miraculous Ayurvedic treatments can be. In this blog, let us explore how Raktmokshan works and why it holds a vital place in Ayurvedic healing. What is Raktamokshan Chikitsa? Derived from the Sanskrit words "Rakta" (blood) and "Mokshan" (liberation or letting out), Raktamokshan is a therapeutic bloodletting procedure aimed at removing vitiated blood from the body.Acharya Sushruta, the father of surgery, describes Raktamokshan as one of the Shodhana Chikitsa (eliminative therapies), especially useful for treating blood-borne diseases. Types of Raktamokshan 1. Shastra Kruta Raktamokshan (Surgical bloodletting) Siravedha:It involves puncturing a vein (Sira) using a sharp instrument to expel vitiated blood (Dushta Rakta) Prachchhana : Multiple small incisions on the skin to release superficial impure blood. 2. Anushastra Kruta Raktamokshan (Non-surgical bloodletting) Jalaukavacharana (Leech Therapy): Use of medicinal leeches to suck impure blood, mostly used where localised Shrunga : Suction of impure blood  using animal horns or modified vacuum tools. Alabu : The term "Alabu" refers to a bottle gourd-shaped hollow instrument used to create suction on the skin to draw out impure blood. Benefits of Raktamokshan 1.Cure Skin Disorders The root cause of most skin diseases lies in the impurity of blood (Rakta Dushti). When toxins, excess Pitta, and metabolic wastes accumulate in the blood due to unhealthy diet, lifestyle, or indigestion, they manifest on the skin in various forms like eczema, psoriasis, acne and pimples, urticaria, pigmentation, and itching.Raktmokshan  plays a crucial role in expelling this impure blood from the body. By cleansing the bloodstream, Raktmokshan helps reduce inflammation, purifies the skin at a deeper level, and provides visible relief in chronic and stubborn skin disorders, offering a natural and holistic approach to skin health. 2. Reduces Pitta and Heat in the Body Individuals with Pitta Prakriti are naturally prone to excessive body heat, a burning sensation in the hands and feet, and profuse sweating due to the dominance of the fire element in their constitution.Pitta-aggravating food and lifestyle choices, such as spicy, oily food, alcohol, or excessive exposure to heat and stress can also suffer from these symptoms.Raktmokshan therapy using the Siravedh (vein puncture) technique proves highly beneficial in such cases. By removing a small amount of impure, Pitta-aggravated blood, this therapy helps pacify the excess heat in the body, restoring balance and providing relief from burning sensations, sweating, and related Pitta disorders. 3.Heals Wounds and Abscesses Raktmokshan therapy is highly effective in healing wounds and abscesses by removing impure, infected blood from the affected area. This helps reduce local inflammation, pain, and pus formation, allowing fresh, oxygen-rich blood to promote faster tissue repair. By purifying the blood and improving circulation, Raktmokshan supports the natural healing process and prevents the recurrence of such conditions. 4.Effective in Migraine (Pittaj Shirahshool) In Ayurveda, Pittaj Shirahshool (Migraine) is characterized by burning, throbbing pain in the head, sensitivity to light, nausea, and sometimes nosebleeds. The root cause is often Raktadushti (vitiation of blood) and Pitta prakopa.Through Siravedh-type Raktmokshan from the cubital region, letting out 30–40 ml of vitiated blood provides instant and long-lasting relief in Pittaj Shirahshool (migraine) by pacifying aggravated Pitta and removing Rakta dushti. 5.Treats breast cyst In Ayurveda, breast cysts are often associated with Dushti of Rakta and Kapha dosha, leading to abnormal growths or swellings in the breast tissue. One effective Ayurvedic approach to managing this condition is Raktmokshan (bloodletting therapy). By removing vitiated blood, Raktmokshan helps reduce local inflammation, clears stagnation, and improves microcirculation in the affected area. Particularly in cysts with tenderness, swelling, or recurrent pain, Siravedh or Jalaukavacharan (leech therapy) around the breast region can be employed under expert supervision to pacify Rakta-Kapha dushti, prevent further growth of the cyst, and support the natural healing process. 6.Treats Varicose Vein Raktmokshan, or bloodletting therapy, plays a significant role in managing varicose veins in Ayurveda by eliminating vitiated or stagnated blood from the affected veins, thereby relieving pressure and improving circulation. In varicose veins, especially due to vitiated Vata and Rakta, blood becomes stagnant, causing the veins to swell, twist, and become painful. Through techniques like Siravedha (vein puncture) or Jalaukavacharana (leech therapy), Raktmokshan helps drain out the impure blood, which in turn reduces venous congestion, relieves pain, burning, and heaviness in the legs, and prevents complications such as skin discoloration or ulcers.  Diseases Treated with Raktmokshan Psoriasis Eczema Acne and Pimples Vitiligo Urticaria (Sheetapitta) Hyperacidity (Amlapitta) Burning sensation in body Migraine (Pittaj Shiroroga) Burning eyes (Netra Daha) Varicose veins Deep vein thrombosis (supportive) Gout (Vatarakta) Rheumatoid arthritis (Amavata) – in specific stages Sciatica (Gridhrasi) Migraine Cysts or abscesses Raktmokshan in Healthy Individuals as a Seasonal Detox When performed in Sharad Ritu (autumn)—a season in which Pitta and Rakta are naturally aggravated in every human being—Raktmokshan helps eliminate accumulated toxins from the blood and prevents future diseases related to blood and Pitta vitiation. In healthy individuals, a small, controlled amount of bloodletting, especially through Siravedha (vein puncture) , serves as a natural detox method, purifying the Rakta dhatu, enhancing circulation, and improving skin health and overall vitality.  Conclusion- Raktmokshan Chikitsa is a powerful, natural, and time-honored detoxification therapy that can bring remarkable relief from a variety of chronic conditions. With proper guidance from an Ayurvedic practitioner, it can cleanse the blood, balance the doshas, and rejuvenate the body from within.
